I could never paint the OEM plate surround, it’s integrated with the bumper and the trim and painting it would ruin that.

Nice! Those cars will last forever with proper maintenance, the M52 + 5-speed combo is quite robust. I’m still rocking the auto in my 540it, but it’ll eventually get replaced by a proper 6-speed.
